Do We Really Need a Little Jesus?

They are everywhere. I’ve seen them at bookstores, at cash registers, even on a co-worker’s computer. One-inch rubber figures of Jesus standing there with a smile, wearing a sash that says “Jesus❤️ You.” The first time I saw one, I thought it was a cute idea. However, the more I have thought about this trend, the more concerned I have become.

The Trend

Tiny figures of Jesus are nothing new. Since the Middle Ages, people have been making small images of the Lord in wood or clay. Often, they were carried for good luck. Nativity scenes include miniature images of the infant Savior, as well. However, the current social media trend began in Hampton, South Carolina, as a prank by a church youth group. In January 2024, the young people placed many of these one-inch figures around the church campus. Pastor Brian Trent filmed a TikTok about the prank which went viral, garnering 600,000 views.

Since then, celebrities, including Miss Universe 2025 Fátima Bosch and reality stars Khloé Kardashian and Kris Jenner, have filmed themselves participating in the trend. Tiny Jesus figures have been placed in a wide variety of high-traffic locations, including hospitals, malls, restaurants, and even the Capitol. Typically, a person documents on social media where they are placing the figures. Hashtags like “Little Jesus,” “Tiny Jesus,” or “Mini Jesus” often accompany the posts. In fact, the motto for the movement is “A little Jesus goes a long way.”

The Problem with a Little Jesus

While it is wonderful that people are talking about Jesus, I wonder if they really understand who it is that they have made into a one-inch mini figurine? Do we really just need a “little Jesus”? I realize that for some people it’s a way to share Jesus’ love. But how can a tiny image begin to convey the depth of love that led our Savior to Calvary? When they hand a little Jesus to someone, are they pausing to explain the life-changing Gospel message?

Instead of leading people to place their trust in the crucified and resurrected Lord, I wonder if these tiny Jesus figures are more likely to be used as a good luck charm. “Oh, I’ve got a little Jesus, so I’m good.” Do we only need a little bit of Jesus’ love, grace, and mercy? Or are we truly sinners in desperate need of the fullness of His grace and forgiveness?

Is it possible that these mini Jesus figurines have ended up watering down the true Gospel message in a culture that thrives on fast food and 30-second TikTok reels? Are they turning our gaze away from the One who walked on water, who healed the sick, and who raised the dead? Is a one-inch Jesus at your workstation taking the place of an intimate relationship with Him?

I Need More of Jesus

Instead of thinking, “a little Jesus goes a long way,” we need to know more of Him every day. The only way we can do that is by recognizing that we don’t need a little Jesus. We need a life-changing encounter with the One whom the apostle John called “The Word.” By Him all things that we see were created. We need to embrace the love that led Him to empty Himself and become a servant. We must share the Gospel with a world that needs to know what it means when we say, “Jesus loves you.”

We don’t need a little Jesus. I don’t have a little Jesus on my desk or by my computer. Jesus isn’t merely a good-luck charm to me. Instead, I have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Yeshua of Israel is not a “little Jesus” to me. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. My daily goal is to know Him more fully. As for me, I want a LOT of Jesus!
