“Glenni,” my 86 year-old mother cried desperately when I answered the phone that Friday afternoon, “can you please help me? None of my toilets work, and it’s going to cost $650 to get my septic tank cleaned out.” She added, “I know money is tight for you, too. Do you possibly have a credit card we could use. I promise I’ll pay you back as soon as I can.”
“Of course I’ll help you, Mama.” I replied. Silently I prayed, “Lord Jesus, please help us figure this out.” I added the words I have been praying for 47 years, “And please draw my Mama to Yourself.” My heart filled with thankfulness that I could help this amazing woman who sacrificed so much to provide for me when she was a single mom.
I thought back to the night 16 years ago when I called her, only to find out that her partner of 34 years had just died. She was headed home alone to their empty house in Pasadena, California. “Mama,” I said, please consider moving to Alabama so you’ll be close to me. We are your only family and would love to have you closer.” I remembered the four-day drive across the country with Blaze, her huge Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. I recalled how our friend Rick Clark helped her build the perfect house for her needs 15 years ago. I realized it was obviously time for a septic tank cleaning.

A half hour later Dana from ‘Round the Clock Plumbing interrupted my musings. “Glenni,” she said when I answered, “I just spoke to your mom. We had provided a $500 gift certificate for a recent silent auction. The people who won it told us they’d never use it. God put it on my heart to ask them if your mom could have it. So, you’ll only have to pay $150. Our guy is there right now cleaning out her septic tank.”

“Wow, Dana! That is amazing!” I gushed, tears filling my eyes. “What you didn't know is that I’ve been praying for the Lord to reveal Himself to my mom for many years.”
“No wonder He put this so heavily on my heart,” she replied. “Your mom said something that reminded me of my grandma – I miss her so much – and I knew we just had to do something to help her.”
When I got off the phone with Dana, I called my mom back. “Did Dana call you?” she asked, adding emotionally, “I’ve certainly got a guardian angel watching out for me.”
“She did call,” I replied. “Mama," I explained, "it isn’t a guardian angel. The Lord God who made the universe is showing you how much He cares for you and how deeply He loves you. He wants to be in a relationship with you, and He is chasing you down with His goodness. Please think about that tonight.”
Two days later I headed to her house for our Sunday evening time together. “I want you to hear the song that Cait and I sang in church this morning,” I said as I played “Good, Good Father” for her. “Mama, His love is running after You. All you have to do is accept it.”
We received the first part of our Septic Miracle that Friday with God’s amazing $500 gift. I’m still waiting for the second part, but I know that my Heavenly Father is wooing my precious mama to Himself, and it will come soon!
